All of us are at risk for developing depression. On the other hand, no one is predestined to develop it. Being aware of the risk factors makes it easier to recognize warning signs of depression, so you can take steps to prevent its onset.
Gender: In the United States, women are about twice as likely as men to be diagnosed and treated for depression. No one is certain why more women are diagnosed with depression; however, there are several possibilities. Changes in hormones may be a cause, since women's hormones can have dramatic swings with pregnancy, birth, monthly cycles, menopause, etc. Women may be more likely to seek help, thus more women than men are diagnosed as depressive. Finally, women, who frequently must balance a variety of conflicting roles, may be under chronic stress, which could lead to depression.
Family History of Depression: If you have a family history of depression, then you are more likely to develop depression.
Personal History of Depression: If you have had depression before, your chance of developing it again increases.
Chronic Pain or Illness: Prolonged illness or pain that lasts for an extended period of time can cause you to become depressed.
Substance Abuse: Drug or alcohol abuse can lead to depression, or the opposite can occur: unchecked depression can lead to drug or alcohol abuse.
